CHILE: From Brine-Water to Lithium Carbonate Mineral.

This subproject studies how the process that transforms brine-water into lithium carbonate mineral is acting upon scientific and local knowledges and practices in the world’s driest desert, the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, where the largest lithium producers worldwide are located. It studies how a critical tension between lithium carbonate production and the sustainability of other forms of water-based life is taking place in the ecologies of practice involving scientists, indigenous communities and environmental activists, policy makers, and the world’s largest lithium companies.
